“You know I can’t.” Even if she could, she wouldn’t. Straight into the dragon’s mouth, she thinks, laughing to herself. Like Otto said, there is no other recourse, no way forward but through.

House of the Dragon 1×4 Review: King of the Narrow Sea.
The lightness in her chest has too much mass, threatening to implode, and she bites her tongue to trap the word in her mouth, kepa. Rhaenyra swiftly turned and grabbed a large cookie, presenting it to the knight with an enticing smile. "It's a chocolate chip cookie, your favorite," she tempted, attempting to bribe him with the delectable treat. Rhaenyra peered cautiously past the partially open doors of the kitchen, her eyes fixed on the tantalizing plate of sweets resting on the table. "Oh, come on, it will be fine," she replied, a mischievous glimmer in her eyes. Rhaenyra pondered for a moment, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

The same bouncer with the gold pin is stationed beside it, joined by the one who came with Daemon. They chat with each other, but she knows they are still aware, still scanning the floor, eyeing the entrances. Her knees are gelled, and it feels like she is standing on a deck in a turbulent sea. She prefers the race, wheels on the ground but pushing the needle to the point it feels like the rubber doesn’t touch the road.

"Rhaenyra! Don't drag the poor girl," Aemma called out after her daughter, a mix of concern and amusement in her voice. She turned to Olivia, offering an apologetic smile. "I apologize. Her cousins have sailed back to Driftmark, so she doesn't have many playmates at the moment."
Seeing him felt like that, going from zero to sixty, but once he was inside Mysaria’s office, left alone, she was wracked with anticipation, sick with anxiety. She wants to call Harwin, but they have plans to meet at her place tonight. His voice would straighten her out, renew her resolve. In the short time they’ve worked together, he has only ever been straight with her, frank about her limitations and the risks. It irritates her, but she needs it, that blunt and fair-minded candor. A small part of her thinks he is the only thing holding her together, reigning her in, because if she were alone, she would’ve broken into Caraxes weeks ago.
This was not the first night Viserys had dreamt of his late lady wife.
Her mother, recognizing the opportunity for connection, had suggested that Alicent acquaint herself with the new princess residing in the grand Keep. Being of similar age, it was hoped that they could discover common ground and form a bond. The young girl glanced down at her elegant blue dress, meticulously ensuring that every detail was flawless.
"Strike when they can't see you?" she offered, her innocent eyes gleaming with curiosity. Aemma's search for her daughter led her to check beneath the table and amongst the nearby plants. It was then that a mischievous giggle reached her ears, causing her to pause. With a mix of amusement and relief, she reached up and swiftly pulled her daughter into her arms, peppering her face with a shower of affectionate kisses.
She was of age; a woman grown by law and expectation. Holding the notion of her eternal innocence would benefit no one now. With little effort, Viserys worked to restart the fire, and for once, Rhaenyra had done as she was told. Her hair pulled back in a simple braid, her clothing appropriate for bed but with a thick robe pulled over the nightgown. And when the room was cleared, Viserys lit a few candles and settled at his desk.

Inside a Filmmaker's Zen 727-Square-Foot Weekend Retreat in Laguna Beach - Architectural Digest
Inside a Filmmaker's Zen 727-Square-Foot Weekend Retreat in Laguna Beach.
While still offering the detailed work that was popular at the time, craftsman style homes aimed to bring back a less pretentious architectural style that was grounded in inviting warmth. Specifically, the Craftsman movement was a celebration of natural materials and forms, and the beautiful designs that could come from artisan craftsmanship. Large, spacious, and open-concept kitchens are the key design style of a contemporary craftsman house.
California’s Relationship to the Craftsman Home
In response to the art deco, Victorian, and manmade, ornamental architecture that took the main stage in the wake of America’s Industrial Revolution, the Craftsman style movement was born. Inspired in part by the British Arts and Crafts movement which was Inspired by England’s Industrial Revolution, the Craftsman movement emphasized the importance and quality of hand craftsmanship. Jack-and-Jill bathrooms, accessed only from each bedroom, can reduce a hallway door and make each bedroom function as a small suite. The negative to this is the need to plan for an additional door which, if not well laid-out, can create a gridlock of doors.
Living Rooms
There is a wide and spacious front lawn to this Craftsman-Style house with a huge tree that provides a nice foreground to the redwood hues of the house. The wooden trellis on the side of the house also has the same redwood finish contrasted with various plants. This is a Craftsman-Style house that looks stunning against a sunset with its wilderness landscape that leads to a warm and welcoming entryway and white stone pillars surrounding the house.
The exterior cladding is often made of wood and is in natural colors, even when painted. Many Craftsman-style homes are easily recognizable by their square, tapered columns that support the covered front porch. This style of porch column is usually wider at the base than at the top and might feature carved details, as seen on this Craftsman bungalow. The design reinforces the traditional look of the exterior while offering sturdy support for the roof.
The front porch is the transition from the elements to built environment where its materials and details set the stage for what can be expected on the interior of the home. The popularity of the Craftsman home over the years owes a debt to noted furniture designer Gustav Stickley. He was renowned as a tastemaker who promoted the Arts and Crafts movement that gave rise to the Craftsman style. In fact, he’s credited as coining the moniker with his at-the-time popular magazine The Craftsman. From the early 1900s to the late 1920s, the Craftsman style dominated architecture, even seeping into design elements like landscaping and interior decorating. And even though Craftsman homes have fallen out of fashion from time to time, they always seem to return.
This three-story Craftsman-Style house is dominated by varying hues of redwood from its walls, arches, and windows. The surrounding wooden fence is also given this same hue which is contrasted by stone walkways and gray tiled roof. When it comes to decorative accents wainscoting and chair rail are definitely components of this beautiful design. Perhaps the most influential Craftsman-style home is the famous Gamble House in Pasadena, California. Esteemed architects Charles and Henry Green designed this winter residence for Midwest moguls David and Mary Gamble—second-generation family members of the Proctor and Gamble empire in Cincinnati, Ohio. “The two brothers were heavily influenced by Japanese style architecture of the time and incorporated this influence mainly into the exteriors of their Craftsman-style home designs,” Yeley says.
Bethany Adams Interiors renovates Old Louisville Craftsman home - Courier Journal
Bethany Adams Interiors renovates Old Louisville Craftsman home.
The opening of the Panama Canal, notably christened by San Diego’s Panama-California Exposition, hastened the decline of the Craftsman. Therefore, their attention turned to homes incorporating Spanish and Mediterranean revival designs. Finally, the Foursquare Craftsman offers the largest, yet most spartan of the Craftsman home models.
Both the American and British Arts and Crafts movement embodied natural materials and were seen as an antidote to the industrial revolution, which caused an uptick in mass-produced furniture. This home style started to debut on the British side in the late 19th century, more specifically 1860s. Consider using a bold color to offset the home's woody or earthy tones typically displayed in these homes, but steer clear of vibrant colors that clash with a Craftsman's natural, effortless feel. Some safe but rich colors include sage green, light beige, charcoal gray, blue, or muted red.
Today, circulation patterns from the rear of the house require an additional decompression zone for stowing backpacks, coats, and mail. The mudroom serves as an exit to the backyard an entrance to an attached or detached garage, and as a storage facility for shoes and coats. The mudroom also functions as a laundry center and as a logical space to put garments used for gardening, exercise or outdoor play. The butler’s pantry has evolved into the chef’s desk and is a small, semi-private space out of sight to pay bills, catch up on email, and keep homework in order. The walk-in pantry is flexible, durable and less expensive to build than furniture- inspired cabinetry.
Even in the present day, the Craftsman keeps stride with California’s progressive embrace of greener, more sustainable living. Two-story Craftsman designs accommodate an extremely energy-efficient method of heating. The upper and lower levels are divided by a door at the entry or exit of the stairwell that helps to trap heat in two distinct areas. These mass-produced bungalows lacked the quality of their Craftsman namesakes. Few boasted the masterfully crafted cabinetry and shelving, the vast welcoming front porches, and the quality of materials. When the Craftsmanship was taken out of the Craftsman, the style dropped in the public’s favor.
As this movement grew in popularity, offshoots cropped up in the same spirit, with some unique aspects. For example, the Craftsman Bungalow movement lauded a new era of architecture on the West Coast. Craftsman bungalows were first brought on the scene by Henry and Charles Greene, who took heavy inspiration from Japanese architecture to create a uniquely zen take on the Craftsman style. The traditional claw foot tub has been replaced with a walk-in tiled shower and compartmentalized water closet. Many times the vanity includes double sinks with cabinetry below to store supplies and towels. The master bath relies on high private windows to create a well-lit and ventilated bathroom.
The abundant windows also maximized year-round sunny days; sleeping porches were used during summer nights and, in the winter, prominent fireplaces kept the homes toasty. The flow of fresh air and natural light united indoors and outdoors in a way not feasible in most other places in the country. Perhaps most importantly, but complementary to other considerations, is the psychology of the color choice. The psychology of color has been studied for centuries and had been well established at the time of the rise of the craftsman style.
“They were appalled at the notion and quickly began to realize the architectural importance of the home,” Yeley says. By 1966 the home was deeded to the City of Pasadena and the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture for preservation. By the 20th century, the bungalow-style models were dotting Southern California and the midwest—beckoning buyers with craftsmanship and curb appeal. Craftsman style is synonymous with “cozy, homey and unpretentious,” says Susan Yeley, creative director and owner of Susan Yeley Homes in Bloomington, Indiana. The den functions well for this use due to its smaller size, which provides the ability to control light and sound. The invention of flat screen monitors, and of smaller audio visual components, has reduced the space requirements for media which lets even a well-appointed media room still function as a play area or at home office.
The exposed wooden beams of this house seem to mold with the wooden trellises over the stone outdoor hearth that matches the stone finish of the tapered support posts. There is a stone flooring that complements the wooden walls illuminated by hanging pendant lights. Stone tapered support posts hold up the second-floor balconies of this Craftsman-Style house that has wooden exposed beams that match the wooden railings.
But the soldiers returning from World War II had little love for the tired Craftsman styles. With The Craftsman being such a popular publication, the architecture style became a household name. In fact, Craftsman architecture finally came full circle when it was partially consumed by the mass-produced machinations it had rebelled against. Industry giants like Sears, Roebuck and Company began to offer “bungalow kits” that came pre-measured and cut. The Craftsman movement was so huge and long-lasting that it inspired an impressive four major models all beneath the Craftsman banner. Each of these models shares a common preference for natural building materials, a reverence for functional beauty, and similar structural designs.
FAQs: Are Craftsman houses more expensive to build?
The 1908 house is considered one of the best-preserved examples of the American Arts and Crafts movement. “The home features low-pitched roofs with long overhangs and expressed rafters, shingle siding, and a stained wood-paneled interior with abundant built-ins,” Grochowski says. While a craftsman home is relatively easy to spot from the outside, there are also certain features that many homes from this era share beyond the front door. We have rounded up some beautiful craftsman interiors to highlight the key elements that make these homes so remarkable. With interior and exterior design trends continuing to emphasize comfort, warmth, and a sense of belonging, the Craftsman Movement is having a resurgence. Their lack of pretension and approachable design make them perfect matches for the cozy, simplistic design and lifestyle trends of today.

This is an interior that has a spacious air to it due to the high cathedral ceiling that is given a wooden shiplap finish and studded with pin lights. The sliding glass doors also serve the same purpose, giving this interior an illusion of being bigger. The master bedroom was foreign to original Craftsman house plans, but has become a major focus in new American housing.
Beautiful Built-In Shelving
This is balanced by hardwood flooring paired with wooden structures built into the walls and a great stone fireplace. Looking for a little help picking the windows and doors that would best suit your craftsman style house? Especially in the Midwest, craftsman houses are some of the most popular and prevalent design styles for new homes. This architectural style offers a timeless charm and grounded vibe that matches the Midwest lifestyle well. However, it’s not uncommon to find craftsman houses throughout the country as well.

The transition between public spaces is delineated with a change in ceiling height, or a cased opening detailed with millwork, that relates to window and door trim. Cased openings and varied ceiling heights work in conjunction with the ceiling treatment as part of the road map that identifies and reinforces the use of the space. Cased openings provide opportunities for a change in color or finish material which initiates a transition through the public spaces. Treatments, such as boxed beams, built-in bookcases, and columns, give the room organization and provide a logical pathway for lighting fixtures and furniture arrangement.

Introducing a downstairs bath, or powder room accessed off or adjacent to the mudroom, allows for a private and tucked-away solution for family and guest. The powder room – accessed from the mudroom – also discourages children or would-be gardeners from navigating the entire house in search of a bathroom. The nook was simply a place to have a quick breakfast or lunch and was not adequately sized for a big meal. As the kitchen has become part of the central core of the home and as lifestyles have become more hectic, the nook now functions as a family dining area.
Opinion: The future of Los Angeles housing can learn from Silver Lake, Fairfax and Crenshaw
He and his wife Maria Alataris, also an architect and founder of Maa designs, had lived in Manhattan for 30 years, and now have two teenage kids. “We’re not used to driving to get a quart of milk or to drop a kid off at school. One difference between the Craftsman-style home and a Prairie-style home is that the overhanging eaves are much wider and hip roofs are more likely than gables. The Gambles occupied this Pasadena home until their deaths, and the famed Craftsman house was bequeathed to family. In 1944, the home was for sale, until the prospective buyers mentioned wanting to paint the wood trim white.
The most sublime and costly of these is the gem-perfect Gamble House in Pasadena, but thousands of California bungalows fill neighborhoods and towns like South Pasadena. At their best, the bungalows appear to arise from the landscape, in hunkered-down lines with deep, cool porches and stone and wood materials whose own superb construction is ornament enough. The craftsman style evolved out of the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 18th and early 19th centuries as an attempt to move away from the ornate, highly decorative Victorian style that had become so popular in Europe. This goes to show that the contemporary Craftsman design aesthetic is the perfect blend of functionality and style. While the big picture is breathtaking, it’s the smallest details that make it work. You can incorporate all or none of these into your home design – whatever fits your style.

In fact, it serves as an unofficial open air living room, encouraging congregation in the presence of nature. These porches are often wide and spacious with rugged support beams or columns upholding a shade-producing roof. When compared to the ornamental trappings of Victorian architecture, Craftsman architecture sought to capture the earnestness of working with one’s hands.
You’ll also generally find things like framed tiles that help to accent the space and provide a more artistic look. The oak, however, is then fumed or even stained to get a darker look rather than the natural lightness. Metal pieces are common though they’ll generally be a hammered style to give a more rough texture and appearance to the pieces throughout the room. The centerpiece of this Craftsman-Style beach house is its viewing tower that looks like a lighthouse. It towers over the rest of the house and its dark roofs that complement the gray walls. This aesthetic is capped off with a landscape of well-maintained shrubs and trees.
The walls are painted in a soft pink with a gray undertone that complements the deep mahogany trim throughout the house. 'It feels very neutral and glows rosy in warm light, which filters into the room,' says Jamie. This Craftsman bungalow's broad proportions, overhanging eaves, and exposed brackets are typical of Arts and Crafts construction. Roof designs are generally either single- or double-pitched on Craftsman-style homes. It's also common for the roof to stretch past the exterior walls, resulting in deep eaves that offer shade along the side of the house or form a covered front porch.

Although bottlebrush buckeye is beautiful to look at, it's worth noting that every part of the plant except the roots — and especially the seeds — is extremely toxic. But while it's a warning sign for people and pets, the gorgeous pink and yellow flowers are irresistible to pollinators. The tree, which grows native to New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey as well as Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, will invite butterflies, bees, and birds to your yard. Students are able to take hikes that range from easy to difficult, learn about aquatics and visit a museum featuring items and animals found in the local area. Families that qualify for a Habitat home are allowed to purchase the house at no interest and no profit for the organization, making them much more affordable than other new homes. They also are expected to perform a specified amount of volunteer labor — referred to as “sweat equity” — while their home or another Habitat home is being constructed.

Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds, repairs, and renovates homes alongside our homeowner (partner) families. Los Angeles ranks as one of the least affordable housing areas in the U.S., and yet Habitat for Humanity is one of the few - if not only - affordable homeownership programs that serves families and individuals earning % of the median family income. But a lack of applicants who met Habitat’s income limits prevented the organization from building a home in San Juan County last year for the first time in several years. Haws said the Perez family qualified for the program after the local chapter received permission from national Habitat officials to relax those income standards slightly.

Many environmental factors related to climate impacts have changed since the 2007 HMP, requiring shifts in management strategies for some habitats. Typically, Habitat officials like to break ground on a new home in the early spring each year to assure it will be finished in time for the family to move in before the holidays. Whether naturally occurring or assisted by Indigenous people, fire was part of the coastal New England landscape for thousands of years prior to European settlement. Some of the habitats on the Refuge - including pitch pines and sandplain grasslands - are fire adapted and require recurring fire to maintain its plant community. When applied correctly, fire can be an important tool to manage invasive plants, set back succession, recycle nutrients, and encourage recruitment of new plants. The Fire Management Plan is the first step to allowing prescribed fire on Refuges and is comprehensive to provide the full range of management options for future years. Prior to using prescribed fire, a Prescribed Fire Plan will be developed with annual prescriptions and further details.

Thankfully, the tree is more attractive to pollinators than garden-munching animals like deer and rabbits. Hearing a chorus of birdsong erupt each morning is reason enough to plant a few extra trees in your yard with the hope that they'll find the branches to be a comfortable home or place to chatter. One of the reasons why birds might be avoiding your yard is that you haven't cultivated the right habitat for them. If the area lacks comfortable trees and shrubs where birds can nest, rest, and socialize, they likely won't become recurring visitors.
It's important to acknowledge the generosity and impact our donors have on the many families we partner with each year. The Habitat Young Professionals (HYP), Carpenter’s Club, President’s Giving Club and Hope Builder’s Society recognize those who give. The group says there was “no meaningful public process” in discussing the proposal and characterized aerial shooting as “inhumane tactics.” Both the coalition and Hahn have said the sharpshooting method is extreme. In a conservation battle that pits native vegetation against imported deer, Catalina Island residents say they’ll take venison over ‘stupid plants’ any day.
